Beargrass Savannah Site Fall:

The Beargrass Savanah site is a small prairie located west of the Longhouse. The savanah's measurements are 50 feet wide by 33 1/2 feet long.

Its borders include a forest overgrown with Blackberry, Fern and Morningglory, and also a cement alley with dumpster and a path that bridges the west parking lot to the Longhouse.

Across the path is sister Camas Prairie and to the east the high and middle elevations habitat. This peaceful, open, breezy spot is currently being choked by weeds,

some morning glory, blackberry and commen grasses. There are  clover looking grasses signifing poor drainige in our area.

Kimberly and I plan to introduce fescue, and hopefully plant native prairie plants donated by our volenteer garden site at Giddian's Landing.

First there is much work to do, pulling up sod, purchasing sand and mulch, and preparing the area.

Beargrass Savannah site Winter:

We started the quarter out with a bang; renting de-soding and tilling equipment, for mixing into the Savannah's soil a heavy truckload of sand/pebble.

As a class we dug deep and planted some 520 Fescue plugs, weeded heavily, and found some hope along with camas bulbs.

We redecorated the area nearest the path and dumpsters that was occasionally used for parking, with seablush, strawberries and log barriers.

We planned an area for Blue Elderberry in th middle of the Savannah, and constructed a makeshift corridor around the perimiter.

Throughout the Winter we planted some 100+ plants donated by the Nature Conservancy last fall in the prairies.

At the end of the quarter we continued to weed, add compost, bless Savannah with fungi, and finally plant our Blue Elderberries.
